How high are you?


You are standing on a bridge or cliff. It's a long way down. But how high are you? Fallometer answers this question.

Select the thing you will drop, and press START when you drop it, and STOP when it hits the ground.

Fallometer will estimate how far it fell and how fast it was going when it hits the bottom.

Fallometer takes into account air friction, and your position on earth.

How it works


'Fall-o-meter' can be used to estimate the height of a bridge, drop-off or cliff by timing how long it takes to drop something from a height.

DO NOT DROP ANYTHING IN AN AREA WHERE PEOPLE MIGHT GET HIT BY FALLING OBJECTS

Set the selector to the kind of object you will be dropping, or something similar.

Do not throw, just drop the object, and press start at the same time. When the object hits the ground, press stop. The display will then esitmate how far it fell, and how fast it was going when it hit the ground.

Interesting fact: Objects fall at different speeds depending on where you are on the planet. Things fall slower at the equator than at the north or south poles, but not by much. The difference is about one third of a percent. Nonetheless, this is why the App asks for your location. It uses this in its formula. If you do not provide your location, it uses an average.

Your location is not really that important, because the biggest effect on rate of a fall is air friction. Air friction is hard to estimate, and can change as an object falls depending on it's orientation.

Objects fall faster and faster until air friction stops it from falling any faster. This top speed of a falling object is called terminal velocity.

If you know the terminal velocity of an object you are dropping, you can set it by setting the picker wheel to 'Set By Speed', and choosing a terminal velocity there.

Because of air friction, on earth, a feather falls slower than a bowling ball. On the moon where there is no air, a feather and a bowling ball would fall at the same speed.
